End Bds

Know Thy Enemy

We don’t need to fight antisemitism—we need to fight BDS.

In Gaza, our enemy is Hamas. Hamas also sits on the BDS board. Alumni of Hamas run BDS-linked NGOs worldwide, hijacking and militarizing the advocacy space. BDS mobilize local groups to act against Israel in every organization, competition, company, union, city, and country. Their strategy is bottom-up.

The BDS campaign (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions) against Israel began at the NGO Forum during the Durban Conference in 2001. At this forum, hundreds of non-governmental organizations adopted a strategy of leveraging boycotts and other forms of political pressure to achieve the complete isolation of Israel as an “apartheid state.”

Dozens of organizations are involved in the boycott campaign, which is funded to the tune of tens of millions of dollars, euros, and pounds, mainly provided directly by European governments and indirectly through aid frameworks that are structurally biased against Israel. Since the decision-making process regarding this funding is secret, in violation of democratic norms, many details remain unknown.

Leaders of the BDS campaign often claim that their goals focus on the occupation and the settlements, but these claims are false. In fact, many activists admit that these boycotts are not merely “a strategy to end 42 years of military occupation of the West Bank and Gaza,” but are aimed at Israel as a whole. For example, As’ad Abu Khalil, a central activist in the U.S., wrote that “there should be no debate on this matter. Justice and freedom for the Palestinians are incompatible with the existence of the state of Israel.”

Ahmad Mour, a writer and prominent supporter of the BDS campaign, stated that “any ending has no meaning if it does not include the dismantling of the Jewish state itself… BDS is indeed aimed at ending the Jewish state.”

Omar Barghouti said that “the only ethical solution is a single democratic, secular, and civic state in historic Palestine” (October 2012), meaning “a single-nation state in which, by definition, Jews would live as a minority” (December 2003).

As seen in many statements by BDS supporters and in the declaration of the NGO Forum at the Durban Conference in 2001, the goal of this campaign is the elimination of Israel as a Jewish state—while using the rhetoric of human rights, accusations of war crimes and apartheid, and demonization to isolate Israel.
